To aspire to get into a particular classification of hotels, it is essential to qualify for it and pass the standards.

1. Size
Usually, the size of the hotel is one of the critical factors in classifying the types of hotels. They fall into various categories depending on the number of rooms they have. Generally, a hotel could have-

• Under 200 rooms
• 200 to 399 rooms
• 400 to 700 rooms
• More than 700 rooms

2. Location
The location of the hotel also helps to classify types of hotels. For instance, if a hotel is located near an airport, on the outskirts of the city, or the city center, etc. The different types of hotels as per location are

• Airport hotels
  They are meant for short stays by airport staff or people visiting a city on work. They also offer a shuttle to and from the airport. They have basic amenities and clean rooms and have a huge turnover of guests staying for a short period.
• Resort hotels
  People on holiday frequent these hotels. They have facilities to help people relax and unwind like a spa, swimming pool, and more. They might be expensive as they provide luxury.

3. Target markets
Types of hotels are also decided by the markets they target. They are similar to location. For instance-

• Economy hotels
  They are priced reasonably and offer basic services and facilities. They might be located a little off the main route but offer good rooms and dining facilities.
• Business hotels
  They cater to business people traveling on work. They also serve tour groups, business groups, and others. They are usually located in downtown or business districts.
• Suite hotels
  These hotels offer a luxury stay. They usually have a living room, dining area, and a separate bedroom. They are excellent for professionals who need to live and entertain for work at the hotel.
• Service apartments
  These places offer long-term stays for guests and are similar to homes. They include a living room, kitchen, bedroom private balcony and also provide services like a washing machine, dishwasher, and housekeeping service.
• Bed and Breakfast
  These are houses converted into hotels for overnight stays. They have 1-10 rooms only and are also sometimes called Home Stays.

4. Level of services
There are different types of hotels as per the services offered. For instance, luxury or five-star hotels target the rich and famous and offer superior facilities and services. Budget hotels, on the other hand, are basic and provide clean and comfortable living, but do not have a lot of services.

5. Ownership
Types of hotels are decided on their ownership too. For instance, a family-run hotel group. A hotel chain owned and managed by officials usually needs to follow policies and minimum standards.
